In September 2026, I had the opportunity to travel from Sri Lanka to Bangkok, Thailand, and attend the 74th Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair.
For me, this was more than simply visiting an exhibition. It was an opportunity to experience one of Asia’s important gem and jewelry markets firsthand, observe the international trade environment, meet people from the industry, and gain new ideas that can contribute to the future development of Pretty Facets (Pvt) Ltd.
From Sri Lanka to the Bangkok Gem Market 🇱🇰✈️🇹🇭
Sri Lanka has been internationally recognized for centuries for its extraordinary natural gemstones, particularly its sapphires and wide variety of colored stones.
Thailand, meanwhile, has developed into an important international center for the colored gemstone and jewelry trade. Bangkok brings together gemstone dealers, manufacturers, cutters, jewelers, laboratories, exporters, buyers, and other industry professionals from around the world.
That made attending the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair particularly relevant to us.
At Pretty Facets, we work with natural gemstones and custom gemstone jewelry while also serving customers internationally. Understanding how other major gemstone markets operate helps us develop a broader perspective on the global industry.
Inside the 74th Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair 💎
Walking through an international exhibition of this scale gives you a very different experience from simply studying market information online.
The fair provided an opportunity to see a wide variety of gemstones, finished jewelry, manufacturing, gemological services, equipment, technology, and other areas connected to the gem and jewelry industry.
For a gemstone dealer, exhibitions like this are also useful for observing how products are presented to international buyers.
Everything from gemstone quality and cutting to certification, jewelry design, packaging, branding, and customer presentation can influence how a product is perceived in the international market.
It was interesting to compare these approaches with our own experiences in the Sri Lankan gemstone industry.
Understanding International Gemstone Market Trends 🌏
One of my main interests during the visit was understanding the international colored gemstone market from a business perspective.
The gemstone industry is incredibly diverse. Two gemstones of the same variety and similar weight can have significantly different values depending on factors such as color, clarity, cut, treatment, origin, certification, and overall desirability.
International exhibitions provide a valuable opportunity to observe these differences in a real marketplace.
For Pretty Facets, understanding these trends is particularly important as we continue working with overseas customers and exploring opportunities in international markets.
Building Connections Within the Gem & Jewelry Industry 🤝
Another valuable aspect of attending an international trade fair is networking.
The global gemstone supply chain involves many different participants — from miners and rough gemstone dealers to cutters, laboratories, wholesalers, jewelry manufacturers, retailers, exporters, collectors, and end customers.
Being physically present at an international industry event creates opportunities to meet professionals, exchange ideas, learn how different businesses operate, and potentially develop relationships for the future.
In a business built heavily on trust, reputation, knowledge, and long-term relationships, these connections can be extremely valuable.
Representing Sri Lankan Gemstones Internationally 🇱🇰💎
Being at an international gem and jewelry event also reminded me of the exceptional position Sri Lanka holds within the colored gemstone world.
Our island has produced an extraordinary variety of natural gemstones, with Ceylon sapphires being among the best-known internationally.
At Pretty Facets, our goal is not simply to sell gemstones. We want to help connect the heritage of the Sri Lankan gemstone industry with customers, collectors, jewelers, and businesses around the world.
Every international market we explore gives us a better understanding of what overseas customers are looking for and how Sri Lankan gemstones can be presented more effectively to the global market.

For us, being involved in the gemstone industry means continuously learning.
Gemology, gemstone valuation, cutting, jewelry manufacturing, international trade, customer preferences, certification, digital marketing, and export procedures all form part of the modern gemstone business.
Visiting events such as the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair provides exposure to many of these areas in one place.
It also gives us new ideas about how Pretty Facets can continue improving — whether through gemstone sourcing, custom jewelry, customer service, international exports, presentation, or education.
From Technology to Gemstones
My own journey into this industry has also been an interesting transition.
Before focusing on Pretty Facets and the gemstone business, my professional background was in software engineering and full-stack development, including experience working on technology projects across Sri Lanka and overseas.
Today, my primary focus is the gemstone industry.
Although software and gemstones may appear to be completely different worlds, the technology background continues to influence how I approach the business — particularly when it comes to digital platforms, online marketing, international customer communication, data, automation, and building an internationally accessible gemstone brand.
Attending an international exhibition like the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair represents another step in that journey.
Exploring Bangkok Beyond the Exhibition 🇹🇭
Of course, travelling to Thailand was not only about business.
Bangkok itself offers a fascinating combination of modern city life, culture, food, shopping, and commerce. Having some time to experience the city made the overall journey even more memorable.
I also recorded parts of the trip in a vlog-style video, including my experience attending the fair, so followers of Pretty Facets can get a glimpse into the journey as well.
What This Experience Means for Pretty Facets
International exposure is important for the long-term direction of Pretty Facets.
We have already been building relationships with customers outside Sri Lanka and successfully sending gemstones and jewelry to international destinations. Our ambition is to continue developing those relationships while exploring new markets and opportunities.
